Whitt’s house is located in the little neighborhood of faculty cottages nestled between the infirmary and the main campus, behind Chadwick Hall and bordered to the east by the forest. There are maybe twenty small homes on three tree-lined streets, all of them painted in muted earth tones. It takes a moment to get my bearings; I’ve only ever been here at night. But as I walk along the sidewalk, I spot Professor Stoken’s house and the familiar porch.

Damn. I was supposed to stop by here last night at eight, after my session with Jessops—another thing which I totally didn’t show up for. I’m sure if I explain to them both what happened with Sasha, they’ll understand. But, shit. I can’t afford to miss any of my classes, and that goes double for the one-on-one tutoring everyone is making time for. I curse myself for leaving my phone back in my room last night. I could have texted to let them know.

I climb the steps and press the doorbell which rings gently through the house. Something on the other side of the door moves, a soft bump that sends a prickle over my skin.

“Professor Stoken? It’s Avaline. I’m sorry I missed our appointment.”

Nobody comes to the door. I grab hold of the brass knocker and rap a few times on the heavy wood, which pushes the door open an inch.

I call out again. “Professor Stoken?”

Something moves again inside and this time I hear a tiny crash of glass breaking on tile. Something isn’t right here. Someone is inside and if they aren’t answering… The professor could be hurt.

I push the door open and it gets stuck about a foot in. There’s something behind the door that won’t budge. I squeeze through the space and step into Professor Stoken’s living room, my mouth going dry. The room is a total mess.

Furniture is toppled, the cushions slashed. Feathers and broken foam cover everything. Drawers hang open and empty, their contents dumped. The shelves and the walls are bare. Everything from books to paintings to plants has been displaced. All of Professor Stoken’s belongings are heaped into a haphazard pile in the middle of the room as if someone had gone through and systematically destroyed everything inch by inch.

A small gray cat bursts off the bookshelf and darts past me. It escapes out the door before I can stop it.

“Professor?”

The house feels quiet. I listen for another moment for signs of movement before stepping through to the kitchen. I don’t want to be here, but after everything that’s happened, I am not leaving without making sure Professor Stoken is all right.

The kitchen looks the same as the front room, everything toppled and torn, piled on the floor. I head through the hall to the bedrooms and his office, there is more of the same. I check the closets and the bathrooms and even under the bed, searching for the professor. He isn’t here.

Sasha’s words ring through my head. I have no idea what
